Bold, exquisitely hand crafted Navajo sterling ribbed bracelet by noted Navajo silversmith Johnny Mike Begay. Begay worked at White Hogan as well as privately, actively working until his death in 1976. He won numerous awards for his jewelry making and his work can be found in many private and museum collections, having been highly collected throughout his career. His “ribbed” designs set the stage for future artisans such as Victor Beck and Tom Hawk that employ the technique in their work. His work was featured in the 2002 exhibit “Jewels of the Southwest” at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This bracelet is an exceptional example of his work. The 13 ribs, or “rails” as they are sometimes referred to, are perfectly spaced, and the terminal treatment is super-clean. The bracelet measures 5.25” inside plus a 1 3/8” gap and weighs an impressive 92 grams. The face of the bracelet is 1 3/16” wide and almost 1/8” thick. Featuring his distinctive JMB hallmark with ample age patina. It’s in fantastic vintage condition with some wear indications with the edges being worn smooth. Very collectable. We have an outstanding coral buckle by JMB also. Due to the construction technique of this bracelet, it is not adjustable for size.
