This outstanding vintage Navajo buckle is beautifully handcrafted in an Old Pawn style. Examining the wear indications and patina of the sterling, the buckle appears to be quite old, with the edges being worn smooth from use. The sterling work is top notch incorporating expertly punched repousse elements, the larger of which being decorated with no less than 30 stamp strikes apiece. The curved stamping is masterfully applied with little variation in positioning and pattern, and the decorative stamps above and below the belt opening are each slightly different and may have been chisel chased. It’s a large buckle based on old concho belt design measuring 3.5” by 3” at it’s widest points and weighing a substantial 62 grams. The buckle is made for a 1 1/8” to 1.25” belt and is hallmarked “NP” on an applied tab—this talented Navajo silversmith is unidentified. The buckle is in pristine condition, masterfully handcrafted and it’s large size and bold design speak to the dedication of the artisan to create traditional, high quality work.
