This impressive Old Pawn Navajo Ketoh is as good as they get.
The basics: the sterling panel measures 3 13/16” by 2 5/8”, it weighs 6.4oz (180grams) and will fit a wrist anywhere from 6.5” to 9” around—the leather thongs make it easily adjustable for varied size. The #8 Mine turquoise stone measures 1 7/16” by .75”, is set in flat bezel and is an outstanding representation of the source. The panel is scratch hallmarked “E” and there are no other identifying marks—the panel tests positive for coin silver or higher. There is a 1” long repair in the leather band that is hand sewn and was done long ago, which is the only apology I’m willing to offer for this museum-worthy Native American work of art—it’s integrity is beyond reproach.
The craftsmanship and attention to detail are indications that the artisan made this piece for a fellow tribe member. Every aspect of the repousse work, the unusual and exacting stamps, the expertly chisel chased lines and the inclusion of a vastly superior stone of considerable size, all point to this piece being created using traditional methods, with no intention of it being offered outside the pueblo where it was created—there’s a possibility this could have been created as a request from one of the many important clients that patronized the group of J.W. Edgar’s talented silversmiths, all of which were the best in the field at the time.
It came into our possession via the J.W. Edgar estate—The Turquoise King of the Southwest, where it has been safely stored since the 1940s. The Bow Guard is covered in medium to heavy age patina, there are wear indications with the edges of the repousse elements being worn smooth on the corners of the plate and the leather band shows considerable age. The excellent condition of this Bow Guard is due to it’s being in storage, which is also responsible for the even, undisturbed, dark patina. The images of our two Ketohs from this impressive estate are somewhat larger in the this Navajo Bow Guard Video.
