Rail design pieces such as these earrings and this buckle by Johnny Mike Begay, were inspired by the railroad tracks that cropped up traversing Native American reservations and pueblos. This handcrafted sterling, domed and hollow earring set by Johnson was created sometime shortly after 1972. His later “rail” work became more uniform, yet these earrings, being an early example, has rails that are not 100% even. The earrings measure 7/8” across, 1/8” thick, and weigh 9 grams. The buckle is hallmarked Y and stamped sterling. These earrings have a matching buckle by the same artisan. Excellent condition with warm age patina.
