Bold and ornate, this early 20th Century Mexican Sterling pin features Aztec/Mayan design. The pin is hollow with the two plates mating perfectly. The repousse has a “soft” look to it as many early Mexican repousse designs were done utilizing a wooden templates. The iconic Aztec figure is adorned in an eagle headdress with a dark green turquoise accent set in flat bezel. The pin measures 2 7/8” by 2 5/8” at it’s widest points and weighs 29 grams. The pin mechanism is what dates this piece; it employs a simple hook where the rod seats and the rod itself is handcrafted. Hallmarked Made in Mexico, Silver, and the artisans initials “JEF”. No positive ID on the artisan but it’s old enough to possibly be a piece made under Spratling’s supervision.
The pin is in outstanding condition and the pin mechanism works perfectly. Tests positive for sterling.
