J.B. Moore emphasized a high level of quality workmanship when working with native artisans in the remote Crystal, New Mexico area. Moore began to develop the popular Crystal rug in 1911, and published the first ever, color Navajo Rug catalog to promote weavings to mail-order buyers. This is a variation of Plate #19 from that 1911 catalog. He also published catalogues in 1903 and 1906. Early Crystal rugs include border accents, crosses, diamonds and a hook element, which are all present in this rug’s design. This fantastic 1920s—1930s example features gradated earth tones within the design elements, a technique Moore encouraged weavers to further develop. The images are larger in this video. The rug measures 5′ by 3′ and 4”, it’s a nice thick, heavy rug in excellent condition. There are two tiny brown spots on one side of the rug (see pic) the largest of which measures approx. 2” in length. It’s weight would allow it to work as a floor rug, as well as a wall display.
A fantastic addition to any Southwestern décor environment.
